Game ready prop models

I updated my portfolio with a couple of new prop models. I made then in like 12 hours each from a concept that was delivered to me, as part of a test requested by an outsourcing company that I got to know through a post in the polycount.com forums I made them in zbrush, sculpted, and textured them in photoshop. This is the concept I used for making then:
I would have added a bit more relief to the chest, but I had a poly count limit of 2k that I had already reached... And didn't want to use too much time. With a few more polys I would have left the topology ready for some animation :)
The topology could be better but it certainly allows some animation as it is now. I made this pose mimicking the concept

Holiday sketch!

So this last week I've been on holidays, but I took my notebook and charcoals with me so I could make some drawing if I thought I felt like it. This one I made was requested by a friend:
I sketched it in pencil and detailed everything using a ballpen. It was quite tedious to draw all the mountain and background filling the whole space in the a4 but in the end it was worth the effort. Only a few more pages and I will have completed the 100 pages sketch notebook I bought like 4 months ago. Over July I've been working with The Game Kitchen in a new 2D mobile and tablet game, drawing the characters and backgrounds. It's been a quick development, we took only 4 weeks for it, and I ended up drawing like 3 illustrations every day... it's been a madness to do all this work all alone but I'm happy with the results. I'll publish new samples of the work I made as soon as the game it's on the stores!

The Dark Knight Motorbike (The Batpod)

[UPDATE, playing with materials and ilumination]
During this last 5 days I did this:
It's a sculpt in zbrush, I took tons of pictures and schemes I found in the internet as reference. It was quite a challenge, I think it's the first time I make a model with all this quantity of detail and so big. I made a video:

2D animation test!

This is my first 2d animation (made in photoshop). I had so much fun doing it this evening!! I didn't expect to have such a great time doing it!! Edit (14/5/12): And a couple more!
This ones where a bit more difficult because of the perspective. I did the dog pup the second and much faster. This thing is being an awesome way of practicing character construction and perspective!

The Wizard, Folds Study

My daily routine has changed quite a bit during this last month. I bought several books in the internet, drawing lessons, animal anatomy, drawing the clothed figure... and a drawing pad. So I dedicate half of the day to studying this, and the other half goes to a game I'm doing with a friend (he programs and I do all the graphics). It'll soon be released to the appstores. To make animations properly I've been studying some traditional animation, so I'm drawing almost full time. I'm improving quite fast! I spent the day today studying drapery and folds, drawing like 5 or 6 examples of types of folds or so, and during the evening I had fun making this drawing. It was like 3 hours with shading and everything. I used a 2HB pencil for everything.

I spent a couple of days modeling this, directly in zbrush. The design is from a concept of one of the weapon from the Mass Effect series

Another Fantasy Axe

The high poly I've done today. Hopefully I will be baking today and start texturing the low poly tomorrow morning :)

UPDATE Monday 19/3/2012
I worked on this over the weekend, and I'm done. This is the final model and wire.

Fantasy Axe

I've spent like a month practicing prop modeling, simple props within a medieval fantasy themed scene. I was trying to make my best in texture and materials. Almost everything I was doing was quite simple, easy to sculpt and texture, and it was looking great. One of my friends sugested that I should try doing complex props from now on, so this fantasy axe is the first of a series of props I'll be working on as an exercise.

It's based on this concept here:

3DS Max CAT bone-based facial rigging tutorial

I wanted to rig this last character I made and do some animations with it using CAT but I couldn't find many information and tutorials on how to rig the face.

So after a few days researching I finally managed to put everything together and make my rigging work and decided to make this video trying to save some headaches to all of the people that tries to learn 3ds max and CAT rigging.

I hope you find it useful.

Facial Rigging and control panel!

It's been a hell of a weekend, working so many hours, trying to figure out how to do this rigging properly using CAT and 3ds max, since all the tutorials I found in bone rigging where done in Maya with the normal skeleton. I could have used Maya directly using the instructions in the tutorials straight away but I knew that if I tried I would end up finding the way...
Having this kind of setup makes animating so much funnier and easier...
I will upload a video of my new toy soon :)

Faith caricature: going realtime with it

Here we go! A video of the progress I've been doing with my Faith cartoon model. After retopologizing, baking normals, etc... I rendered this video. The only thing that I still need to model is the inner of the mouth and I'll probably begin rigging and animating it in no time. That will be if the urge of doing something say... more photorealistic doesn't grows too much.

So the final model is a bit above 7k triangles and uses a couple of 2048 textures. Everything is going all right :)

Faith from Mirror's Edge cartoonish caricature.

A sculpt I've been working on today. I'm a great fan of Mirror's Edge. In the next days I'll probably take it through the whole proccess of baking and then rigging. I would like to do some animation tests with this model :)

ZBrush Sculpting Exercise

This is the latest sculpting exercise I've done in zbrush. It took me about 4 days, 3 hours each day. I've spend a lot of time this christmas studying anatomy again, back on my books and sketching on paper. I also did like a couple full-body quick sculpts to recap all I knew, but after it I felt like I wanted to model something more final. Voilà!
